Synopsis

When Broadway rounder Dan Conby learns that chorus girl Jane Wallace is nicknamed "The Iceberg" because she refuses to tarnish her reputation, he wagers that she is a fake. After Jane tells him that the reward for virtue is the respect of others, Dan introduces her to his aristocratic friends, who snub her because of her shabby clothes. When Jane is fined for arriving late for work, and she learns that the tardiness of two glamorously attired girls is overlooked because their male "friends" own part of the show, she protests and is fired. Thinking herself a fool, Jane visits Dan to relinquish her virginity, but Dan, in the midst of writing her an apology and a proposal, tries to dissuade her by showing her women of "easy virtue" who live sordid lives. When Jane persists, Dan leaves her in his apartment. A doctor from another room asks Jane's help with a woman giving birth. As Jane holds the newborn baby, she realizes that the reward of virtue is untainted motherhood. Dan arrives and agrees, and the two embrace.

Notes

Before the cutting of this film was completed, Thomas H. Ince sustained a shattered collar bone and internal injuries in a near-fatal accident. The cutting of the film was completed by Ince's assistant, E. H. Allen. According to a news item, when the film was shown to Ince in his home for approval, his nurse objected to the way that Bessie Barriscale handled a baby in some shots, and thus Ince ordered retakes to be made.
