Synopsis
Gerardo and his wife, Annalise, are at home when they are visited by a confidence man who attempts to sell them some silver candlesticks. They agree to the purchase, but Gerardo catches him substituting a cheaper pair of candlesticks, and reveals that he himself was once a successful con man and proceeds to tell his story. An actor in a small theater, he was hired to impersonate a businessman with his colleague, Lallo, who, as it happened, absconded with the money. Gerardo was caught and sent to prison. Upon his release he went into partnership with Chinotto, whom he had met in jail. Together they tricked a shopkeeper for a pair of shoes, collected funds for a nonexistent orphanage, stole jewelry, and collected compensation from a restaurant after claiming they were served poisoned food. Meanwhile, Gerardo lost the legitimate job his girl friend Annalise had insisted he get, and as a result he lost her as well. One day he and Chinotto spotted Lallo and Elena, an assistant, stealing a ring from a jeweler. Seeking revenge on Lallo, Gerardo swept away the ring and persuaded Elena to become his new partner. Other successful tricks followed; on one occasion Gerardo impersonated Greta Garbo at a photographic session, but Annalise broke in and forced Elena to leave. Later Annalise offered to help Gerardo with a phony marriage trick, but it became apparent that Annalise had set up a legitimate marriage: hence, their current matrimonial state. The visitor to their apartment reveals that he is a policeman and has come to make an arrest. Gerardo bids farewell to Annalise, and the two men leave. Outside, however, Chinotto is waiting to drive them away. The "policeman," it appears, was a con man after all.
