Synopsis

Spanning a period from the Gay Nineties through the Roaring Twenties, the film is a compilation of excerpts from silent screen comedies, presented chronologically and placed in historical perspective by newsreel clips of Teddy Roosevelt, the Wright brothers, World War I, the Prohibition period, etc. Included are highlights from Charlie Chaplin's The Floorwalker (1916), Easy Street (1917), The Pawnshop (1916), and The Rink (1916), Buster Keaton's The Balloonatic (1923), Daydreams (1922), and Cops (1922), Harry Langdon's Smile Please (1924), and Lucky Dog (1917), in which Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy are cast together for the first time.
