Synopsis

Marc Arens, an architect and long-distance runner, sits in a concert and reminisces about an experience from his past: One evening at a masquerade ball, a woman dressed as an houri and calling herself Jovita repulses Marc's advances, and later she fails to keep an appointment with him. Unaccustomed to being rebuffed, Marc pursues Jovita, neglecting Agnes, a painter friend of Jovita's who loves him. At the same time, Marc has affairs with other women but becomes quarrelsome because he cannot have Jovita and provokes a fight in a restaurant. When he is in jail, he sees Agnes and learns that she is about to be married and that she is actually Jovita.
