Synopsis
While flying to Paris for a vacation, Felicia, the popular star of a Polish radio program, is reminded of her past by the chance remark of a fellow passenger. ... In 1939 Felicia's stage debut as Ophelia is prevented by the German invasion of Warsaw, and she becomes a waitress in the cafe frequented by Victor, the actor who was to play Hamlet in the same production. One night in the cafe, Victor insults a Polish collaborator, and the man is killed by an unknown assassin as he leaves the premises. Felicia hides Victor in her apartment for 5 years and eventually falls in love with him, even though the ungrateful actor yearns only for audience adulation and does not return her affection. To protect him she permits herself to be raped by SS officers and works for a German-sponsored theatrical troupe; but Victor leaves her immediately after Warsaw is liberated, and she is banned from the stage for 5 years because of her wartime collaboration. Years later, after she achieves success in radio, Felicia again meets Victor, now an alcoholic who vehemently denies accusations of wartime cowardice. She begs him to move in with her so they can begin a new life together, but he is unable to face the future and commits suicide by jumping from a window.
