Synopsis

Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, Paul, a young, disillusioned Polish aristocrat, indulges in a flirtation with Lidka, a dancehall hostess. He refuses to consummate their affair since the act would affirm a life force he wishes to renounce. He is called into the army and does not return to his village for 5 years. Now even more disillusioned because of his war and prison-camp experiences, he discovers that the ante bellum aristocracy in which he grew up is rapidly disintegrating; his family has fled the country; and his once complacent friends are struggling for survival. Although Lidka has bettered herself by marrying a count, she has only contempt for her husband because of his collaboration with the Nazis; and when she reencounters Paul, she seduces him and breaks irrevocably with her husband. Following their first night together, she leads Paul to a roadside to watch Soviet tanks rolling into the village. Confident that the upheaval and change are for the better, she tells Paul that they will begin a new life together.
