Synopsis

After an absence of 5 years, American adventurer Gatsby returns to the Mexican fishing village where he had an affair with Magdalena, the wife of a well-to-do fisherman, Pepe. Although Magdalena now has a 5-year-old son, Juanito, Gatsby is hopeful of resuming their clandestine affair. In order to be near Magdalena, he proposes that Pepe join him in an illegal shrimp-smuggling venture. Pepe, however, distrusts Gatsby and suspects him of being Juanito's father. When his suspicions are confirmed, Pepe rejects the child and threatens to kill Gatsby, unaware that the two lovers have rekindled their passion and decided to run off and take the boy with them. Juanito's tender devotion to Pepe has such a sobering effect on the three adults that they put aside their personal feelings for the sake of the child. Gatsby sails away alone, and Magdalena and Pepe decide to try and rebuild their shattered marriage.
