Synopsis

Ciro and Dora move into a primitive house by the sea after a global plague and warfare have destroyed most of the population of the world. Ciro wants to father a child, but Dora refuses to comply, arguing that it is absurd to repopulate a world bent on self-destruction. A group of horsemen from a government agency appear and tell Dora that it is her duty to produce children; they depart, and she still refuses to bear a child. When a whale washes up on the beach, Dora fears that it is an evil omen, and soon Anna, a woman who has been alone for many months, arrives. She is more receptive to Ciro's desire to procreate, and they have sex in the same bed with Dora, who pretends to sleep. The next day, Anna attacks Dora, but Dora clubs her to death, cuts off her leg, and serves it to Ciro for dinner. Eventually, the rotting whale forces the couple to move into a cave, but they return to the beach when the carcass has been picked clean by birds. Ciro again expresses his wish to have a child; when Dora refuses, he drugs and impregnates her. She awakens complaining of an upset stomach, and some days later, Ciro tells her that she is pregnant. Suddenly, a great explosion destroys everything but the skeleton of the whale.
