Synopsis

Alan Winthrop, the younger son of an English family, comes to America where he secures a job as caretaker at Ralph Cornwell's hunting lodge. Cornwell, known in the mountains as Col. Page, is an unscrupulous millionaire who has coerced Edith Strong into marrying him with a promise to save her father from bankruptcy. Mistreated by her husband, Edith leaves him and is about to commit suicide when she meets Alan, who offers her a job as a maid in Cornwell's lodge. During a party at the lodge, Page is shot and three people are accused of the crime: Alan, Edith, and Saul Potter, a former employee of Page, whose wife was ruined by the millionaire. Although Potter had actually fired at Page, it develops that the murder was committed by Laura Le Moyle, Page's cast-off mistress. Their innocence thus established, Alan and Edith realize that they love each other and begin a new life together.
