Synopsis

James Rallston marries a rich invalid widow who has a small daughter named Jean, but she refuses to give him control of her assets. Rallston conspires with Miss Lane, who is Mrs. Rallston's doctor and is in love with Rallston, to give his wife drugs to create a mental affliction and has her incarcerated in a sanitarium run by the unscrupulous Dr. Garside. Fifteen years later, Rallston loses Jean's fortune in speculation. After he offers her as a wife to master broker John Bigelow, with the condition that Bigelow recover the fortune, Jean, who loves architect Ed Pembroke, causes Bigelow to believe that Mrs. Rallston is alive and well. Bigelow manipulates the market to restore Jean's fortune and then locates Garside's sanitarium. Masquerading as a butler who obsessively spouts Shakespeare, Bigelow is admitted. When he has his own doctor vouch for Mrs. Rallston's sanity, Garside flees. Rallston, hurrying there in his car, plunges down an embankment and dies. After Miss Lane confesses, mother and daughter are reunited, Jean plans to marry Ed, and Bigelow is content with his cute little niece and his St. Bernard.
