Synopsis

Hope Ivanovna, devoted to helping the poor, marries wealthy Serge Palma so that she can continue her work, after refusing a poor medical student, Paul Pavloff, whom she loves. The head of the secret service, Count Nicolai, who desires Hope, sends Serge to Siberia for fifteen years, and Paul to the provinces for five years, on trumped up charges. Because he loves Hope, Paul changes identities with Serge so that Serge can serve the lighter sentence, but Hope, learning where Serge was to be sent, goes and finds Paul, now a prison doctor. They live together to avoid discovery, and when they hear that Serge was killed trying to escape, they perform their own marriage ceremony. When Serge arrives, he learns that Hope loves Paul. After an officer overhears them, they subdue him and escape in a sled. Serge is killed in the ensuing chase, but after the pursuing men and horses plunge through a hole in the ice, Hope and Paul are free to pursue their love.
