Synopsis
In the Gypsy quarter of Barcelona, a young man and woman meet at a wedding and fall in love, unaware that their families are sworn enemies. Rafael is a Taranto, and Juana is the daughter of Rosendo, the hotblooded leader of the Zoronga family. The beauty of Juana's flamenco dancing, however, wins over Rafael's mother, Augustias, and she accepts Juana as her daughter-in-law. But as the Gypsy quarter prepares for a fiesta, the elder Zoronga, faithful to his vow of hatred, forces Juana into the arms of Curro, an unscrupulous picao. Juana escapes to Rafael, and the two lovers take refuge at the beach in a small house owned by the Tarantos. To the sound of Christmas Eve celebrations, they repeat their vows of love and make plans to flee to a place where they can live without hate. Violence erupts as Curro finds their hiding place and murders them both. Rafael's brother takes revenge by slaying Curro; only then do the two families mournfully pledge a new peace.
