Synopsis
In a remote part of Egypt, Prof. Karl Nichols, a renowned archeologist, is searching for the legendary tomb of the Glass Sphinx, which is said to possess a mysterious elixir capable of sustaining life indefinitely. Nichols' niece Jenny arrives at the Cairo airport to deliver some equipment and documents to Alex, her uncle's assistant. She mistakes a stranger, Ray, for the assistant and allows him to take her to her hotel. Following the murder of one of Nichols' assistants, the equipment and documents are stolen from Jenny's room. The next day the real Alex appears and escorts Jenny to her uncle's campsite, while Ray trails closely behind. Actually, Alex and Nichols' secretary, Paulette, are in league to murder the professor once the glass sphinx is unearthed, and Ray is a Lloyd's of London agent assigned to protect Nichols' $2 million insurance policy. The tomb is found, and Nichols is knocked unconscious by Alex, but his life is spared when Paulette, who has fallen in love with the professor, intervenes. Alex and Paulette make off in a jeep loaded with treasures from the tomb. Then two of Alex's henchmen reenter the tomb to collect their share of the booty; but the sphinx suddenly shatters into thousands of pieces, killing them instantly. During a severe sandstorm, Nichols, Jenny, and Ray (who has revealed his identity) take after the escaping Alex and Paulette, only to discover upon reaching them that they have been captured by desert marauders. Alex offers to trade Paulette for his own freedom. Nichols attempts to intervene, but Paulette saves Nichols' life by stepping in the path of a sniper's bullet. Ray tracks down Alex with the aid of the Cairo police and then returns to resume his romance with Jenny.
