Synopsis

Gilbert Sterling, a drunkard and ne'er-do-well, is disowned by his wealthy father, over the protests of his indulgent mother. Years later, after Gilbert's brother Ralph has ruined the family in dishonest stock speculation, the Sterlings seek refuge in an almshouse. Meanwhile, Gilbert has become a changed man in a Western mining town where he saves an Indian who is suffering from smallpox from being lynched by vigilantes. Gilbert cares for the dying man and, in gratitude, the Indian leaves him a rich mine. Now wealthy, Gilbert returns East, takes his parents out of the poorhouse, and ruins Ralph on the stock exchange. Finally, he is reconciled with his brother and his parents and reestablishes the family business.
