Synopsis

This film records the daily lives of Bill and Louise Dukes and their 18 children. The camera shows the chaos of living conditions for this Catholic family in their small Seattle home and the resulting strain on family relations and budgetary considerations. Bill Dukes is a Boeing assembly inspector whose understanding of his parental role is influenced by the compassion of his wife. The film focuses on preparations for the marriage of the eldest daughter, Bobbi. Narrator Henry Fonda appears at the beginning and at the end of the film, while the greater part of the dialog reflects the conversations of the family.
