Synopsis

The boys of the provincial villages of Longeverne and Velrans are rivals; and open conflict breaks out between the two groups when two Longeverne boys are insulted by the Velrans boys, although the meaning of the insult is really not understood. Buttons become the prize of war, and each captive is stripped of all he possesses until the Longeverne boys led by Lebrac attack nude and deliver a crushing defeat. But there is a traitor among the Longeverne boys, and, as they are celebrating their victory at a feast, the Velrans boys led by Aztec attack and completely rout them. The traitor is discovered and punished, but he informs the elders, thus causing all the Longeverne boys to be punished. Lebrac, however, escapes to the woods and eludes searchers for 4 days. He is captured, and both he and the leader of the Velrans boys are sent to reform school for waging war without sanction.
