Synopsis

Sergio, a young research historian, answers a newspaper advertisement soliciting a man with his precise qualifications. He is offered a job at a magnificent palace assembling the largely erotic memoirs of a recently deceased general but declines the offer upon learning that his duties include ridding the household of Fabrizio, who currently holds the same position. He changes his mind, however, when he sees the beautiful Aura, daughter of the late general and his elderly widow, Consuelo. Aura divides her attentions between Sergio and Fabrizio, who is her lover, and tension between the men grows until Sergio accidentally kills his rival and is forced by the two women to dispose of the body. Madly in love with Aura, he attempts to curtail her occasional disappearances by locking her in her room, but he discovers to his horror that her face has become that of Consuelo. Sergio pleads with the witch, who has reincarnated her youth in Aura, to restore his love to him; but becoming aware that another scholar is about to be engaged to replace him, he realizes that he is destined to meet Fabrizio's fate, and he destroys the witch by fire.
