Synopsis

SCHERZO ALLA POLLACA: During the Warsaw uprising of 1944, an unscrupulous and self-centered Pole named Dzidzius ignores the chaos and bloodshed surrounding him, choosing instead to live the luxurious life of a black-marketeer. He even allows his wife to openly entertain an officer of the Hungarian Army, at that time allied with the Germans. One day, by chance he is forced to undertake a dangerous mission: informing the Warsaw underground that the Hungarians are willing to join forces if the Russians will accept them as allies. By sheer chance Dzidzius arrives safely, but the offer is rejected, and he makes his way home. His life has been changed, however; rather than remain at home in luxury, he decides to participate in the war effort. OSTINATO LUGUBRE: The Polish inmates of a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp maintain their morale by tenaciously clinging to the belief that one man, Zawistowski, managed to escape. He actually lies crouched in the roof, dying of tuberculosis. Another prisoner, Zak, is a highstrung individual, no longer able to bear the petty naggings and bickerings of his fellow prisoners. Finally, in a display of melodramatic heroism, he escapes by the only means open to him--suicide. Zawistowski eventually dies, and the men smuggle his body out of the camp in an oil burner, thereby saving face and preserving the legend of the man who escaped to his freedom.
