Synopsis

Millionaire Verner Vade, lustful despite the impotence of his nearly 80 years, plans to show his contempt for the family who fear and despise him by leaving his entire fortune to charity. He pays Rita, the wanton housemaid, to disrobe while he watches. Later, seeking to track down a mysterious phone call from "Death," he goes to an apartment in a condemned building, which, as he suspects, is a trysting place for his young wife, Anna, and her architect lover, Ragnar. While Vade watches Rita taking a shower at the apartment, he is knocked unconscious by an unseen assailant and dragged into a closet. Regaining consciousness, he overhears an encounter between Anna and Ragnar. He stumbles back to his own home, where his 8-year-old niece, Lisa, burns a rag doll and recites a rhyme about his death. Inspector Durell, who has been investigating Vade, arrests Rita's brutal fiancé, waiter Valter Velin, on suspicion of assault. Vade confronts Anna with her infidelity and tells her he intends to prosecute her brother-in-law, Bengt, for embezzlement. Meanwhile, Anna's evil and demented nephew, Boris, attemps to rape Rita but is stopped and ordered out of the house by Vade. Vade is stabbed to death as he returns to his room, and his body is discovered while the family celebrates his 80th birthday. Inspector Durell confronts the assembled hopeful heirs and unmasks the killer.
