Synopsis
Twenty years have passed since the years of the Third Reich when Pilenz was a student in Danzig. Now he returns to visit his old school and recalls his friend Mahlke: Young Mahlke possesses an exceptionally large Adam's apple, a condition for which he compensates by striving very hard to excel in school and at sports. An exceptionally strong swimmer, he is the only one of his friends who can dive and reach a sunken wreck in the harbor waters. Mahlke dreams of winning the Iron Cross, with the hope that the medal, when worn around his neck, will attract attention away from his Adam's apple. A war hero who won the medal visits the school, and Mahlke is unable to resist the impulse to steal it. The theft is discovered, Mahlke confesses, and Klohse, the rigidly authoritarian school principal, has him expelled. Mahlke joins the German Navy and wins the Iron Cross for bravery. He returns to his school to recount his adventures but is forced to leave by the unforgiving Klohse. Mahlke deserts from the Navy and with his longtime friend Pilenz visits the sunken wreck where as students they spent so much time. Mahlke bids farewell to Pilenz, dives to the wreck, and does not return.
