Synopsis

A violent struggle for power follows the Congo's independence from Belgium in 1960. A group of black Simba rebels, led by Isaku, warn the nuns at a Belgian Roman Catholic mission that all whites and colonialists are in danger, but the nuns cannot leave until they receive the orders from the bishop. Sister Maria leaves the mission to help a native woman and is raped in the woods by Simba marauders led by Nangu. Nangu and his men then plunder the mission, killing Isaku and the mother superior. They prepare to murder the rest of the sisters, but a group of white mercenaries saves the day. Sister Maria returns to Brussels and discovers that she is pregnant from the attack in the Congo. Scorned by her family and rejected by her sister Lisa, Sister Maria receives an ultimatum from Rome: she must either give the child to the Church or renounce her vows. Dr. Pierre Lemon, a childhood sweetheart, proposes to Sister Maria and offers to accept her child. Though Sister Maria decides to keep the child and leave the religious order, she refuses to marry Pierre because she is already married to Christ.
