Synopsis

A few years after the Gold Rush and following the death of Amos Winthrop, her father, Prudence leaves California as well as her sweetheart, Joaquin Sepulveda, and takes her six brothers and sisters to New England to live with her Uncle Caleb. Gold has been discovered on Caleb's land, however, so Caleb brings the family back to California to work the claim. The wealthy Don Francisco Garcia wants to add the land to his own holdings, and as a result, while Caleb and Joaquin are away, he sends his vaqueros out to capture it. Prudence and the children manage to hold off Garcia's army until the United States cavalry arrives to defeat the vaqueros, after which Joaquin and Prudence, with their fortune now assured, make plans to get married.
