Synopsis

Both the Romans and the Carthaginians are laying siege to Syracuse, and defense preparations have been entrusted to Archimedes. When his beloved Diana becomes pregnant by him, her evil stepbrother, Gorgia, who is in league with Rome, delivers her to some Roman soldiers, a shock that causes her to lose her memory. Eventually she marries Marcello, a Roman consul, while Archimedes obeys his father's wishes and weds the beautiful Clio. Several years later, Archimedes goes to Rome to arrange a new alliance. When Diana sees him, her memory returns, but they decide to sacrifice their love so that their child will not learn of his true parentage. The Romans attack Syracuse, and Archimedes turns back their fleet by using "burning glasses," which magnify the sun's rays and destroy whatever they are turned upon. In the final fighting, both Marcello and Gorgia are killed. With Syracuse still free, Archimedes, whose wife has died, is reunited with Diana, but they vow to maintain the secret of their son.
