The character of Orlando was inspired by Orlando Canuto, director of the Rio Maria Rural Workers Union in Para, north of Brazil. His father Joao, president of the Union, was brutally murdered in 1985 after numerous threats and a refusal of police protection. No one was charged with the murder. In 1990 Orlando and his two brothers were kidnapped and both brothers were killed. The picture of Orlando's brothers in the film is of the real Canuto brothers' bodies. All other events and characters in the film are fictional.
Began shooting December 1994.
Completed shooting January 1995.
The title "Jenipapo" derives from the name of a sweet, though potent, liquer from Bahia.
