Synopsis

Captain Deane and Major Burleigh are returning with their troops from a frontier post when they are attacked by hostile Indians. The men have been ordered to avoid a direct military confrontation, but Major Burleigh, prompted by military vainglory, insists on counterattacking. Deane refuses and parts company with the major and his men, later defending Elinor Folsom from an Indian attack on her isolated ranch. Deane is arrested for insubordination and cowardice, but he is cleared of these charges, is released, and whips Burleigh in a fight. Deane is then ordered to convey a military payroll, and Burleigh incites a band of Indians to intercept him. Elinor learns of this plot and rides to warn Deane, and the two are soon compelled to fight for their lives. They are rescued by the cavalry, and Burleigh is shot. Elinor and the captain are wed.
