Synopsis

James Houston, incarcerated in prison, persuades a fellow inmate who is about to be released to impersonate him and visit his ailing mother in Virginia. The inmate, William Potter, agrees and, because of his physical resemblance to Houston, is accepted by his family. William falls in love with James's sister Allane and discovers that Johnson, an alleged friend of the family, is in reality Dick Ligget, the man responsible for his having been sent unjustly to prison. After William thrashes Johnson for insulting Allane, Johnson publicly denounces him and Mrs. Houston dies as a result of the excitement. Potter, unable to contain his love for Allane any longer, confesses his deception to her. Meanwhile Johnson, intending to shoot Potter mistakenly kills James, who had just been released from prison. William is arrested and convicted on circumstantial evidence, but is saved by the testimony of Pete, a half- witted Negro. The police then come after Johnson, who is shot while attempting to escape and confesses on his deathbed that he had railroaded William to prison. William is then exonerated and all ends happily with the union of William and Allane.
