Synopsis

Civil War veteran Major Jefferson Armitage is forced by financial circumstances to move with his two orphaned grandchildren, Dick and Shirley, from their Alabama home to Brooklyn. After Dick's friend, Bobbie Baker, and Shirley fall in love, Bobbie upsets the Major by whistling "Yankee Doodle." When Dick gambles $150 which he took from his employer, financier Walter Haskell, and loses, Shirley offers to pay the debt by working as Haskell's stenographer. Haskell threatens to give Dick's confession to the police unless Shirley gives in to his advances, and lures Shirley to the office one night by seemingly forgetting to lock his safe, which contains Dick's confession. As Shirley struggles with Haskell, his wife enters with detectives. To protect Dick, Shirley claims to be Haskell's mistress, and hides the confession in Mrs. Haskell's bag. That night Haskell is murdered. Shirley is accused, but later, Mrs. Haskell reveals that Shirley was with her at the time, trying to retrieve Dick's confession. After Haskell's mistress, the real killer, is apprehended, Shirley is free to marry Bobbie, who now whistles "Dixie" for the Major.
