Synopsis

Ruth Merrill, unjustly accused of burglarizing a safe, is convicted and serves a jail sentence. After her release, she meets Edna, who lives with her brother, Dr. Richard Boulden. Ruth is destitute and is tempted to turn to theft, but instead she runs away and is injured in a fall. Dr. Boulden treats Ruth's injury, and the two fall in love and get married. Ruth's father, the true criminal in the safe case, is released from prison for another crime and discovers that Ruth has married a wealthy doctor. Merrill is followed by Higgins, a corrupt detective, who blackmails Ruth, knowing her past. In a fight between Higgins and Merrill, Higgins is accidentally killed, after which Merrill flees and Ruth is accused of the murder. While hiding in a barn, Merrill accidentally drops a lighted cigarette and is badly burned in the ensuing fire. Dr. Boulden treats Merrill, who then takes responsibility for his crimes so that Ruth can be set free.

Notes

Some reviews list Charles Davis and Joseph Edwards in the cast, but it's probable that the reviewers just mixed up other names in the film.
