Synopsis

Ruth Endicott naïvely marries middle-aged millionaire Randolph Schuyler, and soon suffers from her husband's coldness and the regimentation that his two spinster sisters, who run Schuyler's New York household, inflict upon her. When Ruth secretly inherits 50,000 pounds, she buys the adjoining house, and after Schuyler goes to Chicago for a month "on business" with his former mistress, Ruth entertains a Bohemian crowd disguised as Miss Victoria Allen, or "Vicky Van." Chester Calhoun, who earlier became infatuated with Ruth, now falls in love with "Vicky." After Schuyler returns and hears about Vicky at his club, he visits, and discovering the ruse, viciously berates Ruth. When Schuyler is found dead that night, the noted detective Fleming Stone interrogates Chester, who unwittingly leads Stone to a secret door from Ruth's dressing room to Vicky's house. When Ruth is accused, her maid Tibbetts confesses stabbing Schuyler as he was choking Ruth. Stone assures Tibbetts that she will be acquitted, and Ruth and Chester embrace.
