Synopsis
When Anne Elliot's two children are stricken with scarlet fever, the house is quarantined and her husband Nicholas is forced to seek lodging in town. In his loneliness, Nicholas, a novelist, becomes infatuated with his illustrator, Esmee Hale, a Bohemian who decides to free Nicholas from his commonplace existence by having an affair with him. Forced to pay Esmee's bills, Nicholas approaches bankruptcy, while Anne, having invested her money wisely, triples her savings. Anne learns of her husband's affair, and after suggesting that the family spend the summer by the seashore, she invites Esmee along to collaborate on Nicholas' new play. Feigning illness, Anne retires to bed, leaving Esmee to care for the house and children. Having proven a dismal and ill-tempered failure at cooking and housework, Esmee departs, and Nicholas gratefully returns to his loving Anne.
