Synopsis

In spite of his poverty, John Langton wins the hand of Beth Coventry, and the young couple lives happily in their "Love Cottage", until Connie Beverly falls in love with John and plots to destroy the marriage. Aided by Philip Murdock, Beth's former suitor, Beverly sows the seeds of discontent by appealing to Beth's one vice, vanity. Convinced by the two schemers that her allowance is too meager, Beth drives John into debt and finally to crime. The couple separates and while John works to recoup the money he has misappropriated from Beth's wealthy aunt, Beth indulges in a carefree social life. While attending a lavish ball, Beth is struck by lightning and is left with a prominent facial scar. Fearful of John's pity, she goes to live in seclusion with her aunt, but when she discovers John's monetary sacrifices, she returns to their home, arriving in time to prevent his suicide.
