Synopsis

John Maddox, very nearly a woman-hater, goes West to be a ranchman, and rescues Beatrice Clive, an English girl vacationing with her father, Lord Dulverton, from a narrow ledge below a cliff. Six years later, after having amassed a fortune, John reads that the Dulverton estate is for sale. Still interested in Beatrice, John arranges to lease it, but not wanting to humiliate them, he makes the condition that the family remain and treat him and his sister as invited guests. John soon learns that, because of her family's dire financial situation, Beatrice has become engaged to Sir George Trenery. Because Trenery has wronged Beatrice's maid, Margaret Quentin, John convinces Margaret to warn Beatrice, until Trenery's threats silence her. When Beatrice, upset at John's accusations, plans to elope, John persuades her to show him the supposedly haunted house on the estate. There they meet Margaret's father, who convinces Beatrice of Trenery's treachery. Beatrice then weds John and they return to his Western ranch.
