Synopsis

Ellinor, a child of the sea raised by Old Peter, a lighthouse keeper, meets and falls in love with Mason, a rough sailor, who tricks her into marrying him in a phony ceremony. Without warning, Mason leaves Ellinor, saying that he will return one day. Later, Ellinor meets Hudson, a rich widower with two grown children, and agrees to marry him. The children, however, cannot forget the memory of their dead mother and will have nothing to do with Ellinor. Hurt by their animosity, Ellinor threatens to leave but Hudson pleads with her to stay. Eventually, Ann, Hudson's oldest daughter, realizes that her father will be deeply unhappy if Ellinor leaves and, in a dramatic scene, convinces her to remain.
