Synopsis
When shopgirl Mary Turner is sent to prison for a theft that she did not commit, she denounces the man responsible, Mr. Gilder, and swears that she will exact revenge. Four years later, Mary is released and begins working with Joe Garson and several well-known crooks who function within the boundaries of the law to avoid arrest. Mary meets Gilder's son Dick, who falls in love with her, and she agrees to marry him in order to avenge herself on his father. Meanwhile the police, in a attempt to apprehend Mary, frame her with the help of English Eddie, a stool pigeon who induces Garson to rob the elder Gilder's house. Through a ruse Mary is called to the house during the robbery and arrives as Garson kills Eddie. Mary is arrested for the murder, but after several interrogations, Garson confesses. Mary, now free, realizes that she loves Dick and the two face a happy life together.

The premiere date for this film was April 29, 1917, although it did not go into general release until May. The original title for this film was Who Shall Cast the First Stone. A 1916 Australian film was based on the same source. Other films based on that source include a 1923 film made by Joseph M. Schenck Productions, directed by Frank Lloyd and starring Norma Talmadge; a 1930 film made by M-G-M Pictures, directed by Sam Wood and starring Joan Crawford (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1921-30; F2.6436 and F2.4103); and a 1939 Metro version which starred Ruth Hussey and was directed by Gustav Machaty (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1931-40; F3.5144).
