Synopsis
Suzette and her mother are Huguenot refugees living in a New England colony whose elders persecute any so-called deviant behavior, labeling it witchcraft. When Suzette's mother becomes ill, Suzette seeks the help of Nokomis, an Indian woman who has been accused of witchcraft. Suzette meets and falls in love with Richard Wayne, ward of the miserly Makepeace Struble, but Struble, who also covets Suzette, sends Richard to work for the governor so that he can marry her. By accusing her sickly mother of witchcraft, Struble blackmails Suzette into marrying him. When her mother dies, Struble becomes increasingly abusive to Suzette, and in her anger, she wishes him dead. To protect her from evil, Nokomis gives Suzette a talisman, telling her that an Indian uprising is brewing. After Suzette goes to warn Richard about the Indians, Struble, striken with apoplexy, accuses of her of casting a spell on him. Although she has saved the town from attack, Suzette is sentenced to hang. Through the last minute intervention of Richard and the governor, Suzette's life is spared, and she and Richard marry.

The story for this film was written by Robert Ralston Reed, a New Jersey physician, and was selected as the prize-winning project of the Jesse L. Lasky training program at Columbia University. The class in photodramatics was taught by Professor V. O. Freeburg, and William C. de Mille was the judge for the competition.
