Synopsis

Englishman Bertie Cecil, the oldest son of the Viscount Royalieu, takes the blame for his younger brother Berkeley's forgeries. He leaves his childhood sweetheart Venetia and joins the French Foreign Legion unit stationed in Algiers. There he wins the friendship of the Emir when he rescues the Emir's wife from the clutches of Chateauroye, his commanding officer. His childhood chum Rockingham, who visits Algiers with Venetia, recognizes Bertie and urges him to reclaim his estate. His refusal leads to a scene wherein he strikes his superior officer and is condemned to death. Later, Cigarette, a regiment mascot of sorts, who loves Bertie, rides through a sandstorm, and fends off marauding Arabs, to bring Bertie his pardon. She arrives too late to show the reprieve and receives the bullets intended for Cecil, in her own heart. In the end, a now-exonerated Bertie is reunited with Venetia.
