Synopsis

Sally Temple, an actress in eighteenth century London, is loved by her neighbors on Plump Lane who receive money from her to pay their oppressive landlord, the Duke of Chatto. When Lady Pamela, the ward of Lord Romsey, marries three weeks before she comes of age, Sally is selected to impersonate the girl when her guardian returns home after an absence of many years. When Lord Romsey sees Sally, he falls in love with her, unaware that she is not actually his ward. After he and Sally become involved in a series of odd circumstances which involve their assumption of various disguises, all ends happily when they marry. As a wedding gift, Lord Romsey gives Sally Plump Lane, which he has forced the Duke of Chatto to sell to him, and she, in turn, gives it to the inhabitants.
