Synopsis

After Mrs. Anne Winchester is acquitted of the charge of murdering her husband, she leaves Nashville and comes to a small town in Long Island to escape notoriety. Here she and widower David Brinton, the owner of her boardinghouse, develop a strong attachment towards each other. When Alan Woodward, who is pursuing David's daughter Julia, meets Anne, now known as Mrs. Wharton, he recognizes her as Mrs. Winchester, and threatens to denounce her if she interferes with his planned seduction of Julia. Anne warns Julia not to elope with Woodward, but when Julia refuses to listen, Anne disguises herself as Julia and goes with Woodward to a hotel in a neighboring town. After Anne escapes their room, the drunken Woodward falls from a window to his death. Anne is suspected of murder again, but she succeeds in proving that she was in the lobby at the time Woodward fell. David faithfully sticks by her during the inquest.
