Synopsis

Lelia Crofton, a Louisiana belle of the 1860's, loves Burleigh Mavor. By chance, she sees one of her father's black stablemen making love to a neighbor's maid, whom she supposed was white. The incident shocks Lelia and leaves a great impression upon her. When she rejects suitor Steve Daubeney, he threatens to expose a damaging secret about her mother, whom she has never met. Remembering the incident with the neighbor's maid, Lelia worries that her mother might be black, and when Daubeney learns of her fears, he leads her to believe that they are well-founded. To keep Daubeney quiet, she agrees to marry him. On her wedding day, however, Mrs. Crofton appears at the church to beg her daughter's forgiveness, and the marriage is halted as Lelia sees she is white. Colonel Crofton swears revenge on Daubeney, but the young man has already disappeared from the plantation. At Fort Sumter, Daubeney, a Confederate private, captures Burleigh, an officer, and ties him to a tree to tar and feather him. Informed of the misdeed, Lelia rescues Burleigh, and both escape from Daubeney and his gang. Later, as Burleigh and Lelia are about to exchange wedding vows, Daubeney attempts to kill his rival but is shot as a deserter before he can pull the trigger.
