Synopsis

Bessie Gale, a theater prima donna, is pursued by wealthy idler Robert Morton. Although he vows to possess her, he fails and she goes West with her theater company. The train leaves her stranded at Peace Valley in the high Sierras, and there she falls in love with a shepherd, Robert Goodman, and goes to live with him and his mother in a cabin. Goodman invents a formula to cure a form of sheep plague and Bessie, because she is more worldly, travels to New York City to negotiate with a pharmaceutical manufacturer. Back East she is reunited with her former theater crowd, including Morton. Suspecting that Bessie is tempted by Morton, Goodman travels to New York and finds them together at a disreputable party. Robert confronts Morton and is seriously wounded in the encounter and needs a blood transfusion. When Morton is found to have contaminated blood, Bessie donates her blood to save her husband's life.
