Synopsis

Angélique lies pensively in a hotel room after Marcos, a priest, has made love to her, left money, and departed quickly. As her cat cuddles up next to her, Angélique recalls the events leading to her present predicament. Angélique finds life in her small fishing village unbearable. One day, while riding her bicycle, Angélique is knocked down by a car owned by Count DiMedici, a business tycoon who owns the entire island. The count offers Angélique a job as maid in his mansion, and, though aware of the count's ulterior motive, she accepts the opportunity to leave the village. Angélique becomes aware of the rivalry between the count and his jet-set son, Alain. Though Alain has a girl friend, Carla, Angélique is attracted to both father and son. She nevertheless joins Alain's crowd and samples LSD, yacht parties, and nights in discotheques. The count also takes Angélique out, and people assume that she is his mistress. When Angélique sees the count make love to his business associate, Francesca, she seduces the stableboy, who also receives the favors of the count. She learns that she is to be the prize at a roulette game between Alain and the count; and when Alain wins, he expresses a desire to marry her. Angélique returns to the mansion, where she is abused by the count and has sex with Francesca while the count secretly watches. Eager to leave the house, Angélique goes to meet Alain but finds him making love with Francesca while the count plays the piano. Realizing she has been used, Angélique flees and is approached by a man who propositions her; faced with no alternative, she accepts. Angélique now knows that she can never return to a life of poverty.
