Synopsis

When Lady Vivienne refuses to marry Henry Porthen, a man of wealth but of poor social bearing, Porthen entices her to his country home with Freddy Sutherland, a spineless young aristocrat of her acquaintance, and, isolating her, places her at Freddy's mercy. Lady Vivienne faints, and on awakening she finds Porthen dead--shot by a jealous secretary. Freddy disappears, fearing implication in the crime. Some years later, while investigating her property in the Transvaal, Vivienne is saved from bandits by Kerry Burgess, a homesteader with whom she falls in love; but she is conscience-stricken (until he confesses his cowardice) upon discovering Freddy in a degenerate state. Wolf Montague, an unscrupulous politician who has been rejected by Vivienne, plots to flood a river valley; Vivienne races against time to warn the settlers and is rescued from the torrent by her lover, Kerry.
