Synopsis

Twenty-five years ago, before her marriage to Minnesota farmer Caleb Gare, Amelia, then engaged to Mark Jordan, bore Mark's child out of wedlock when he was accidentally killed. Now, Caleb, with his merciless intolerance, uses this knowledge to dominate her as well as her other children: Martin, a soft-eyed youth of twenty-one; Judith, a spirited girl of nineteen; Ellen, a stupid, nearsighted girl of sixteen; and young Charlie, a hell-raising imp. Lind Archer, a young schoolteacher, comes to live with the family and becomes friends with Judith, though she abhors Caleb's tyranny; she soon falls in love with Mark Jordan, who works at the Klovatz farm and is actually Amelia's illegitimate son. Judith, who loves Sven Sandbo, longs to be free of her oppressive yoke and rebels against Caleb, causing her mother at last to show open defiance. To expose his wife's past, Caleb summons Mark Jordan to the house; on the night of the meeting, Caleb falls into quicksand, and they are all liberated by his death.
