Synopsis

Joseph Beaugarde, a young, aristocratic southerner studying for the ministry, meets and seduces Bessie Williams, a cigarstand girl who is in love with him. Beaugarde returns to his plantation to prepare for his ordination and his forthcoming marriage to Marie Carrington, a girl of his own social standing. Bessie bears his child and loses her job because of the baby, and some Negro servants give her shelter in a log cabin when she inadvertently wanders near Beaugarde's plantation in search of a resting place. Thinking that she is dying, they call for Beaugarde. Beaugarde repents when he sees Bessie; he marries her immediately and severs his ties with the church. His erstwhile fiancée transfers her affections to another admirer.
