Synopsis

The dissolute Sir Henry Falkland travels to Sierra Leone to establish himself in the ivory trading business. There he attracts the charming Maida Verne, a young French Sudanese woman who is loved by Falkland's new partner, an Oxford-educated Arab named John A. Ghengis. On a long drive, Falkland takes advantage of Maida, and upon their return, she tells John that she is engaged to the Englishman. Brokenhearted, John departs on a trading expedition with Falkland, during which he discovers that the Englishman's wife plans to join him in Africa. The two men struggle, and Falkland returns to the village believing that he has succeeded in drowning John. When Falkland shuns Maida, she is publicly ostracized, but John returns, and the villagers, learning the truth, turn their anger towards Falkland. The villain shoots himself, but John conceals the suicide from Lady Falkland and then marries Maida.
