Synopsis

Sally Blair, a headstrong stenographer in the Davidson insurance office, who says she does not believe in marriage. She accepts a date with her boss, Mr. Warner, forgetting that she had made plans with the new salesman, Peter Douglas. Warner takes Sally to a nightclub and, in a private dining room, tries to force himself on her, but she retaliates by blacking his eye. The next day at the office, Sally blackmails Warner into a promotion to his personal secretary. Later, at the wedding of Sally's friends, Ann Seymour and Mac Tierney, Peter proposes to Sally. The next day, Peter's mother, who believes Sally is a gold digger, tells her to keep away from Peter. Ann then confides to Sally that Warner has asked her to go out with him and she is afraid that she will lose her job if she refuses. The next day at the office, Davidson requests that Sally accompany him as his secretary, while his spoiled daughter, Linda, gives a party on his yacht. Sally agrees to go and is surprised to see Peter there in Linda's company. That evening, Peter visits Sally and tells her that he loves her, but she asks him to leave. In the morning, Linda tells Sally that she knows of Peter's late visit, and agrees to have her father promote Sally if she will stay away from Peter. When Sally returns home, she finds a distraught Ann waiting in her apartment. Ann relates that Mac kicked her out after learning of her date with Warner. In an effort to reunite her friends, Sally explains things to Mac against Ann's wishes, but Ann kills herself in Sally's absence. Mac blames Warner for Ann's death and goes after him while he is at a nightclub, but when Mac arrives, a drunk Warner, who has tried to force himself on yet another woman, is dead after having struck his head on a table during their struggle. The morning papers announce Warner's death as well as the engagement of Linda to Peter. Davidson proposes to Sally, although he knows that she does not love him, and she accepts. Sally confides in her friend, Mamie, who arranges with Mac to find Peter because she knows that Peter is Sally's true love. Sally and Peter go on a drive, but when Sally tries to tell him of her impending marriage, he crashes and before help arrives, she flees the scene. In the hospital, an unconscious Peter cries out for Sally and with the doctor's urging, Mrs. Douglas finds Sally and brings her to Peter's side. Having broken her engagement to Davidson, Sally professes her love to Peter who regains consciousness and vows his devotion.
