Synopsis

After Frank Merrill, a Great Lakes pilot, loses his life in a storm, his wife Edith moves to the city, where the necessity of providing for her child Teddy forces her to steal. Convicted of theft, Edith serves a three-year term in prison, and there becomes acquainted with a thief called "Diamond" Mabel. Upon her release, Edith kidnaps her child from the state orphanage, moves to another city and secures a position in a department store. Jim Roberts, her superintendent, falls in love with her and they are married, but Mabel interrupts their happiness with the threat of revealing Edith's past unless she steals $500 from her husband. Detective Robert Jordan, however, traps Mabel, and although Jim learns of Edith's earlier theft, he forgives her. Edith willingly returns to prison to serve time for breaking her parole but is pardoned and allowed to return home to her husband and son.
