Synopsis

Puritanical minister Michael Faversham shows no compassion when he orders Rose Gibbard to confess publicly that she has an illegitimate child. The Reverend also denies his own feelings of desire for Audrey Lesden, one of his parishioners. By chance, the two meet on a lonely island one night, and the force of their love becomes irresistable. Horrified to learn that Audrey is married, the Reverend confesses at the next service, doffs his robes and wanders among the poor dispensing charity. Suddenly, the Reverend awakens from his sleep and realizes that the whole episode was a dream to teach him tolerance and compassion.
