Synopsis

Dissatisfied with his position in society, John Trimble heeds the dim image of Evil in his mind and embezzles a sum of money from his firm. When a state investigation of company funds threatens to expose his activities, John leaves his wife and mother and hides out on an island near the city waterfront. Changing clothes with a corpse that has drifted ashore, John mutilates the body and sets it adrift, and later, it is reported that John has been murdered. Under the assumed name of Edgar Smith, John wanders aimlessly around the world, and in Hong Kong he becomes addicted to opium. Meanwhile, his wife Jane, believing him to be dead, marries George Coggeswell, who becomes the governor of the state. John returns home to visit his dying mother, who passes away from shock, but as the fictitious Edgar Smith, he is arrested as his own murderer and sentenced to death. Knowing that a public revelation of the truth would ruin Jane's happiness, John finally listens to the whispering chorus of conscience and allows himself to be executed.

Notes

Perley Poore Sheehan's serial was published as a novel by G. H. Watt in 1927. Portions of the film were shot on the Ohio River. According to a news item, director Cecil B. DeMille was considering the use of a method for coloring film, which he developed with cameraman Alvin Wyckoff, for the whole film of The Whispering Chorus. Previous DeMille films only contained certain scenes which were colored, and no information has been located to determined whether he did have the whole film colored. A modern source credits DeMille with editing the film and includes Julia Faye in the cast.
