Synopsis

Dr. John Lancaster, a brilliant surgeon, is addicted to morphine. While performing a major operation under the influence of drugs, which are supplied to him by Myers, his villainous secretary, he commits a minor blunder for which he blames his nurse, Joan Wentworth. Moved by Joan's dedication and devotion, Lancaster finds her another job at a distant sanitarium, caring for an insane woman, Mrs. Dana. Eventually, Dr. Lancaster himself becomes a patient at the sanitarium and after many setbacks, is nursed back to health by Joan. When Joan is attacked by Mrs. Dana, she is rescued by Dr. Lancaster, who still suffers relapses whenever Myers is around. After a particularly difficult surgery, Dr. Lawson, Lancaster's outcast, look-alike half brother, also a victim of Myers' drugs, comes to the sanitarium intoxicated, and while impersonating Lancaster tries to rape Joan. Defending herself with a gun, Joan staves off her attacker until Lancaster appears. The impostor brother and Myers burn down the sanitarium and perish in the inferno while Dr. Lancaster saves Joan's life.

Notes

Scenes for this film were shot in Chicago and in Richland Center, WI. According to a contemporary news item, a duplicate of the operating amphitheater in Mercy Hospital of Chicago was built for the production. The film's distribution was delayed in both Pennsylvania and Ohio as the story's subject matter caused problems with the censors.
